![]() Jackson County, Oregon has passed, and the courts have upheld, a county wide ban on growing GMO’s. The Farmer’s Daughter does a great job giving an overview of the decision that was upheld on Monday in Oregon. This is not a ban on the consumption, sale or processing of GMOs. It is only a ban on growing them. It’s obvious why conventional farmers would lose sleep over such a decision, but here are some other people who should be just as angry. 1. Consumers: County by county ban on production practices will negatively impact food choice and food price. If this single county sets a precedence and farming management decisions are being made in courtrooms by judges, instead of at kitchen tables by farm families, food selection will go down and price will go up. Consumers, preferably with reliable and fact based information, should have the right to choose which type of farming practices and products they want to support with their purchases. Farmers should then have the right to respond to consumer demand with farming practices that make the most sustainable and economic sense for their farms. 2. Small Business Owners: Any small business owner should be enraged at the government making management decisions for us. An important and often overlooked fact is that each family farm in your community is a small business. They employ part time and full time workers, they buy and sell thousands of dollars of goods within the local community, they pay taxes, and they donate time and money to local causes. The Government, without the support of fact or science, determined some farm families to be of more worth than others. They have handed a death sentence to conventional family farms in their county. 3. Supporters of Young Farmers: Young farmers could be wiped out if the government limits their ability to use the latest technology. Young and beginning farmers face unique challenges compared to their more established counterparts. Our margins are even thinner than our neighbors that have been operating longer. Our debt is greater, our equity is less. We make farming decisions based on long term projections and rely on the ability to use all resources available to us. If the government removes our ability to farm using the most advanced seed technology available, it would very well bankrupt us. On good years there may not be measurable difference in yield (income). But on bad years? We could suffer a major loss without the assistance of insect protection, drought protection, and more that GMO technology provides. Go here for an in depth analysis of the cost and income differences of GM and non GM crops. 4. Science Community: In a single ruling, a judge rejected the lifetime work and opinions of scientists who have devoted their careers to studying GMO technology. There is no more thoroughly tested food on the market today than GMO variety food crops. As explained by Genetic Literacy Project, 89% of scientists believe GMO foods are safe! This judge threw science, fact and reason out the window and instead used emotionally changed anecdotes to make a ruling. 5. And everyone else. It has become cliché to call someone un-American, or un-patriotic when they don’t agree with your principles. But there is something terrifying to me about a group of voters willing to strip away the ability of farm families to make their own management decisions. It’s even more terrifying the government would make such broad based laws with no science, fact or reason. Remember, this decision has nothing to do with the actual consumption of GMO's products. This ban only limits the ability of families to chose which production practices are best for their family on their farm. (Note - there is no safety or nutritional difference in organic and conventional raw products. The difference in organic and conventionally grown products is ONLY in production practices.) Read here for a great analysis on the two.

I am an Oregonian, and while I live in the land of woo, I am frustrated with this stupidity. Pseudoscience reigns here...

I live in Idaho just across the border from Oregon. They care so much about GMOs but legalize recreational marijuana use sometimes I wonder who is running the show in Oregon.

Hey Jake, When they gave me extensive allergy tests they put stuff (ie: foods and chemicals) on my arm to see if I had a reaction like a rash or hives ect. to it, if I did then ITS simple I should not eat it! Yes it does the same thing on my leg or stomach or any surface of my body.

Crazy as it sounds the doctors do not have any exact idea as to why I can go along fine then all of a sudden my blood pressure bottoms out, heart stops and poof I am dead. Pretty terrible. The last time it happened I was gone so long they gave up on me I sat up took a breath with a sheet pulled over my head. My body temp dropped 5 degrees that time. That was 3 years ago and it seems with the strict diet and staying away from all chemicals as much as possible has really helped.

I can explain Ron - If you look above Kate says there is no difference between pesticides, herbicides, Insecticides or not using these items. She loves her Roundup, because they can't farm without it - that is how far the Dumbing down of farming has gotten - Actually I listened to a speech about the dumbing down of farmers at a farming convention and loved it! All the Experts are there to tell farming how to do everything - vets, nutritionists, soils - on and on - and farmers just follow - Yeah right there is no difference - right - why do you use the Roundup then Kate - because it is a weed Killer! yes killer - it kills and if you drink enough of it it will kill you too - not good please do not do it - it is not water....

It's odd, isn't it, that these people have NO problem with organic and conventional foods produced using mutagenesis, which moves thousands of genes (instead of just one, with GE), with no oversight whatsoever (contrasted with GE crops, the most studied and regulated food on the planet). Cognitive dissonance.

Good for Jackson county, Oregon. This type of Monsanto GMO propaganda has been spread by the so called news media for far too long. Any lie repeated often enough becomes accepted as true.

Monsanto is unjustly accused of forcing farmers to grow GMO crops. These same people now actually force farmers to grow non-GMO. You don't see the hypocrisy? It runs rampant through anti-GMO activism: accusing opponents of things they don't do, while doing it themselves. Banning accounts with dissenting opinions from commenting on their Facebook page? Anti-GMO groups. Being threatening and aggressive to counter protests? March Against Monsanto (no, Zen Honeycutt wasn't ambushed but MAM protesters did surround and shouted at counter protesters.

(Mother) Monsanto dropped the ball on this issue ! When roundup ready seed first became available they didn't inform the general public. I myself plant roundup ready seed, and have enjoyed the simplicity of the chemical treatment program for corn and soybean crops. (Mother) Monsanto developed the traits and charge us a ROYALITY fee for using their technology. So don't you think that they (Monsanto) FAILED the public with THEIR lack of information ??? The American Farmer is the GREATEST caretaker of the land and its bounty !

Just to be clear, allergies develop over time. I used to not allergic to cats, but I'm severely allergic to them now. I grew up around cats. I am also, slowly, becoming allergic to horses & dogs, which I also grew up around.

If there is so much controversy over how safe Monsanto products are, why would anyone even want to take the chance of eating or growing it in the first place ?!?! It's been considered by many to be a slow poisoning

Don there is not a legitimate controversy over the safety of GMO's (which by the way are developed and sold by numerous other companies in addition to Monsanto).

I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me. Then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
