I need you to hear this loud and clear - I’m so sorry for everything this year has thrown at you. I’m so sorry for all the things you cannot control that put so much weight on you. But hear me - YOU are not defined by this year’s crop. Or this year’s income. Or this year’s “success”. You are not the farm. You are more than the farm. I saw you leave again this morning, smiling, but still carrying the stress. I know the first thing you did was drive down by the creek to see how much the water has receded. After you do chores in flooded pastures, you’ll sit with your Dad to try and figure out what fields might dry out the fastest and what, if anything, can be done while you wait. You’ll run the numbers another time or two, to see if it all makes sense. You’ll run through the calendar a few more times, to count down how many days you have left to get caught up on work. We both know you’re never going to be caught up. You’re standing there, facing wet fields and a crop that may not generate enough income to cover its own expenses, hay fields that can’t be cut, and calves that don’t quit eating just because it’s wet. In your head, you’re hearing the clock - tick, tick, tick - counting down the hours you’ve got to do the work you’re so far behind on. I know, that even though you keep smiling and laughing, the stress is getting heavier each day. I see it in your eyes. I feel it in the way you toss and turn all night. So I need you to hear me again - YOU ARE NOT THE FARM. You are a man who works harder than anyone I know. You are a man who is honest to a fault. You are a man who always finds new ways, better ways. You are a man who can keep the big picture in mind while maintaining laser focus on the details. You are a man who quietly, and humbly, prays for God to help you on the tasks he’s laid before you. You have a great way of telling things so people understand. My Dad Jimmy Musick was 2018 president of Wheat Growers he was on stage when Trump signed the Farm Bill and he got to talk to him for a second one of the main things he told him was how important NAFTA is for the farm economy and how disappointed he was that they did away with Country of origin labeling on beef. Most people don’t understand how important these things are.

Thank you so much for these words. I don’t have a farming husband. My boyfriend didn’t grow up the way I did. But my dad farms, so does my brother, and most of my uncles and cousins. We had a wet year last year. Barely had enough hay to get through until this years first cutting. Then we had a bunch of rain for the last couple of weeks and one of my bottle baby goats died from pneumonia, and it was hard. I was kicking myself over it. So thank you for this, it means a lot. 💕

I too felt left out. I farm as an equal partner with my husband. I realize that it's supposed to be a letter from a wife to her husband, but we need support too! Our burdens are heavy; sometimes heavier; because not only do we help with the farm (or work in town to support the farm), we take care of the kids, laundry, cooking, cleaning, bookkeeping, and a million other jobs. I have to be the one who has to sit down with my husband and discuss the reality of our situation. We continue to put our faith in God. We have been praying for all the farmers affected by the flooding this year. It's so heartbreaking.

I feel the pain of the crop farmers this year but you forgot to mention that dairy farms have suffered for four years with little hope in sight. We are so numb to the stress and pain we can't feel anything and by the way the government hasn't helped us a bit Wow! How perfectly, perfect. These words couldn’t describe my feelings any better if I would have written them myself. I don’t think this life we lead has ever worn on my husband as much as it has this year, and he’s been farming his whole life (he’s 53)!! A beautiful reminder of who the "farmer" is and isn't. As I read it, I thought of my son who is in a totally different profession, yet so much of his daily life is shaped by his job and career path that he has little (really no) control over. The concepts you laid out are applicable to all of us, in every walk of life. We do our best, give what we are able and then must realize that it is God who is in control of it all.
